A new worm has been detected which is using Valentine’s Day to spread itself through e-mail greeting cards.
Valentine’s Day is usually the most common day for hackers to practice intrusions or the spread of viruses. The Waledac C worm spreads by sending a fake Valentine’s Day gereting card using e-mail. The recipient then clicks on a link to download the fake card which downloads the Waladec Storm worm.
The e-mail message includes a link to download the card. However, if the user clicks the link and accepts the subsequent file download, they will actually be letting the Waledac C worm into their computer.
The malicious files are randomly named such as “youandme.exe”, “onlyyou.exe”, “you.exe”, and “meandyou.exe”. To make matters worse, the e-card entices the user to click on a row of hearts or roses by stating, “Guess which one is for you?” Which then collects all the e-mail addresses stored in that user’s computer. The worm then re-distributes iteself by using the collection of e-mails in each new user’s computer system.
